Fargo, North Dakota — On July 14, 2023, Fargo Police Officers were responding to a routine traffic accident on 25th Street South in Fargo on the afternoon when, 37-year-old Mohamed Barakat opened fire on officers and first responders with a .223 caliber rifle. Police Officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes were shot and critically injured. Officer Wallin ran toward Barakat’s vehicle, was able to unholster his weapon and fire one shot before he was hit by Barakat. Officer Wallin was fatally shot once by Barakat. Wallin’s training officer, Zach Robinson, engaged in gunfire with Barakat. Officer Robinson radios for help, reporting officers down, and continues to try to neutralize the shooter who has been struck and is on the ground, but continues to reach for the .223 caliber rifle and 9 mm handgun on his person.

Bystander Karlee Koswick, who was involved in the initial crash on 25th Street South, was shot after the three officers were already down. She tried to run for cover when she was hit by Barakat. Officials say when Barakat’s attention turned toward her, Robinson had the opportunity to fatally shoot Barakat. Officer Robinson fired 31 rounds at Barakat and hit him 21 times. Officer Robinson told him to drop his gun 16 times, to which Barakat continued to wave a gun around. Officials believe Barakat was wearing some type of body armor during the exchange. Barakat was shot and killed around 2 minutes into the altercation. His vehicle was loaded with three long rifles, four handguns, more than 1,800 .223-caliber bullets, three canisters filled with gasoline, and two propane tanks filled with Tannerite, explosive materials used for target practice.

Investigators said Barakat searched online for articles about mass casualty incidents and the Downtown Street Fair, suggesting to authorities he intended to open fire on thousands of people attending the event. Police visited Barakat’s home and interviewed him at least twice in recent years due to concerns related to his guns, though authorities say he appeared to have acquired the weapons legally. Barakat was a Syrian national who came to the U.S. on an asylum request in 2012 and became a U.S. citizen in 2019. The injured officers, Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes, and bystander, Karlee Koswick, have since been released from the hospital and are still recovering from their injuries. Officer Robinson has undergone a mandatory psychological evaluation and came back to work in the office for a period of time. Robinson decided he was ready to go back in the field and is currently back on the streets with another officer.

  1. "Barakat was a Syrian national who came to the U.S. on an asylum request in 2012 and became a U.S. citizen in 2019."

Watch as cnn and msnbc protects this man.

  2. Description says .223 caliber rifle, officer states its an AK, not that it matters, but the report sounds like a 7.62.

  3. That was unbelievable… Kudos to that officer who kept his attention towards the subject and under serious amount of stress and pressure was able to stop the attack.

  4. My respect for law enforcement grows and grows. Of course there are police who commit crimes and use excessive force. Watch this video and tell me, was the man shooting the AK 47 not committing a crime using excessive force? A bystander was shot. So comparing this to 'kneeling on rioters" or "roughing up people' is a totally invalid comparison.

  5. After seeing the three officers down, I was ok THIS is the one where I should have taken the content warning seriously.

  6. The dude had his car decked out like a suicide run. Thank God he was "dispatched" before he got to the crowds. RIP Officer Wallin

  7. Condolences to the Officers family and fellow officers, hoping that the injured officers do get well and props to the Officer who ended this nightmare.

  8. Instead of attacking Russia that helped the Syrian government bomb its own people he attacks the us… average jihadist I.Q.

  9. "Barakat was a Syrian national who came to the U.S. on an asylum request in 2012 and became a U.S. citizen in 2019."

Guess we are not going to talk about this? This was an attempted act of terrorism… But hey, Trump Bad we need to focus on him.

  10. So apparently the shooter was involved in that accident while on the way to the fair. (You can see the rear end damage, when the cop comes up to put a few more rounds in him)
He pulled up in the parking lot, and he was done for, as the cops would have come to check his vehicle and seen his arsenal.
Thankfully that one cop was on the opposite side of the SUV. The shooter didn't even know he was there, you could see the officer pop up. The shooter was caught off guard and was just standing there. The other 3 were bunched up. As a cop you cannot get complacent literally anywhere anymore. These psychos roam free everywhere.

  11. And democrats are still confused about why we don’t want open borders…. I bet you won’t see this on the news. It’s fucking shameful. We are giving actual terrorist asylum.

  12. That is how you win a gun fight. Aside from the radio calls which are a waste of time at that point, he continued to shoot and get off the X. A hit rate of 66% under those conditions is fantastic marksmanship. And to continue to move forward on a gunman without cover shows the bravery of this officer. It's unfortunate the one officer died but I doubt anything could have been done about that because it happened so quickly. No officer working a traffic accident expects to come under fire from an AK-47. Switching on that quickly shows that these officers took their training seriously. And then when he goes around the back of the car to finally end it his first shot appears to be a headshot which ended everything. Again that is textbook how to win a gunfight. You have to have the mental makeup, the marksmanship and the training has to be muscle memory at that point. Clearly this officer had all of that.
And once again the goodness of the United States costs people their lives. This piece of garbage was saved from Syria by the United States and then he turns around and kills US citizens. I hope there's a special place in hell for that piece of garbage.

  13. I'm 110% 2A, but I'm curious about the prior 2 visits to his residence about his guns???

I've owned firearms my whole adult life and NEVER had a single incident where I had to talk to LE at my home about them…. Something very fishy about that.

Good job by the officer to use cover properly and get good hits on the terrorist. Probably saved a few more lives and definitely the two officers who survived this scumbag.

  14. Yep keep letting the sand people in. They are a great asset to the community here in the US 🙃

  15. RIP Leo Wallin.. 😥 Super props to the officer that took out the shooter maniac… You sir are a living hero.. God bless and keep are Leos safe. 🙏🏻

  16. Jesus that guy took alot of rounds, took a pistol class recently and the instructor was harping about spare mags and this is great evidence why you might need them
