1. On November 5, 2015 Jesse Suhanec, an Army Ranger who had served in Afghanistan, lost his mind.

   The following paragraph is adapted from the 33-page report of a forensic psychological examination administered to Suhanec. It generally explains a portion of the events – from Suhanec’s perspective, as related by the forensic examiner:

   “Suhanec woke up early and something told him to watch the Matrix movie. He was under his bed watching the movie on his cell phone when the movie started talking directly to him, telling him to take the red pill. So at about 5:45 am he took “12 to 15 red pills” [his prescribed Adderall -ed.] and then went to work.”

   What follows is the consensus-reality version of what happened that day.

   Suhanec’s position as a soldier at Joint Base Fort Lewis-McChord provided him with armory privileges. On the morning of October 5, 2015 Suhanec went to the armory to inspect a specific 9 mm handgun that was stored at the armory. He took the handgun and ammunition, and then checked out a large Army van and drove into the City of Lakewood, Washington.

   In a residential neighborhood on Grant Avenue SW, a man by the name of Kevin Anthony was on his way to meet with his ex-wife to discuss a co-parenting plan. Kevin never arrived. His ex-wife was in her residence, as were many neighbors, when they heard multiple shots fired. A neighbor then saw Kevin’s truck leaving the area with its windows shot out. 

   Anthony, who had been shot multiple times, managed to drive himself to a nearby Popeye’s parking lot, where he laid on his horn. Two nearby soldiers found him with multiple gunshot wounds to his face, head, and shoulders. Anthony was transported to the hospital where he underwent surgery. Incredibly, he survived.

   Suhanec was then witnessed walking over to the Army van, where he put on a sweatshirt and left the area on foot. Shortly thereafter, Suhanec approached a woman – Sarah Ramsey (sometimes spelled “Ramey”) – just up the street from the location he had shot Kevin Anthony. Ramsey was in her driveway when Suhanec placed his gun to her head and demanded her car keys, threatening to kill her if she refused. In a panic, Ramsey claimed to not know where her keys were. Suhanec left for her neighbor.

   Jesse Suhanec pounded on Ramsey’s neighbors’ door. Seeing that their unexpected visitor was armed with a gun, the occupants refused Suhanec entry. Suhanec then went to another door of the same residence and again pounded on it, this time claiming to be the police. He demanded entry once again, and was again denied.

   Minutes later, Suhanec knocked on the door of Craig Smith. When the door opened, Smith was directly in front of Suhanec, who was holding his handgun at waist height and pointing it at Smith. Suhanec demanded his car keys, but Smith refused. Suhanec left.

   Police officers surrounded the area and brought in a dog to aid in finding Suhanec. Suhanec spent hours evading capture. He abandoned his clothing and covered himself in mud, hiding in a hole in order to avoid being found by the police K-9 until he could no longer stand the cold. Hours later, Suhanec hid the gun and gave himself up to a couple at their home, where he was held at gunpoint until police arrived. 

   This is the police interview of Jesse Suhanec. [Yes, it begins partway into the conversation. No one seems to know where the beginning went and it’s not worth pushing them on. Relationships matter.]

   After the interview shown above, Suhanec took officers to where he had hidden the gun. It was recovered, still loaded with four live rounds. Suhanec was ultimately charged with Assault in the First Degree and Attempted Robbery of Kevin Anthony, Assault in the Second Degree and Attempted Robbery in the First Degree of Sarah Ramsey, Attempted Burglary in the First Degree of Carrie Velasquez and Elisha Browning, and Attempted Robbery in the First Degree of Craig Smith. Each with a Firearm Sentence Enhancement for being armed with a loaded 9mm handgun.

   In a downward departure that surprised most, if not all, Suhanec pleaded guilty to the crimes charged and was sentenced to a whopping six years in jail. Emails obtained by Real World Police, sent from detectives to other department members immediately after Suhanec’s sentencing, explained that the defense had two forensic psychologists that were going to testify Suhanec was insane at the time of the offense.

   Speaking personally for a moment: I took that at face value when I first read it, however I have since purchased a copy of the 33-page report that was the work product of multiple forensic psychological examinations administered to Suhanec. The full report will be available on Patreon as soon as I finish redacting it, but I want to share some selections here:

   “The legal and psycholegal literature has described the nature of the act to mean ‘whether the person knew what he or she was doing at the time of the act.’ That is, did Mr. Suhanec know that he was taking the handgun and van from the armory, driving to a location where he encountered the victim Anthony, and continuing on with the events that took place thereafter. It would appear, from Mr. Suhanec's statements at WSH and when the police had questioned him on the date of the incident, that he knew what he was doing at that time.”

   “If Mr. Suhanec took the overdose of Adderall with the intent to commit suicide, then it would appear to be a volitional act resulting in a "condition of mind proximately induced by his voluntary act, thus precluding a defense of insanity.”

   “During the police interview the day of the incidents, he acknowledged the wrongful conduct of committing robbery and assault, and was willing to accept the consequences of his conduct. Thus, while he may have believed he had been wrongfully pursued by the CIA and other operatives, he nonetheless appeared to have the ability to know right from wrong with respect to his acts.”

   “There is no doubt that Mr. Suhanec had been suffering from symptoms of a mental disease or defect at the time of the crime, with possible impairment of his impulse control. However, it does not appear that during the period leading up to and including the charged offenses, the level of Mr. Suhanec's symptomatology impaired in any significant manner, his ability to form the element of intent. Whether Mr. Suhanec actually intended to perform the acts of which he is charged is for the trier of fact to ascertain.”

7. Why does it make a difference if someone is insane or not when they commit a crime. How can he only get 6 years after he shot someone in the head & almost kill them? I understand if they get sent to a mental institution instead of jail but to get out in 6 years? That's actually insane.

   What is stopping him from doing the same thing again when he is out?

11. The thing is is that people have no idea what these young men are put through. Just the training alone is beyond brutal. Then they send them to a hostile foreign country to be hunted and shot at. I'm definitely not saying that's an excuse because it's not but, some of these young men just snap and I believe this young man is a clear example.

    “She said he was depressed after his second tour in Afghanistan, that a doctor on the base prescribed Adderall and that the drug caused him to lose touch with reality.”

24. Fun fact, a "red pill" of adderall contains 12.5-30mg of adderall. He took 12-15 of them so he took 150mg-450mg of adderall, but a lethal dose for him would be around 1500mg. So all he did when attempting suicide was put himself in to psychotic episode.
