Pineville, North Carolina — On May 14, 2024, at 3:10 p.m., The Pineville Police Department (PPD) received a shoplifting call for service from the Food Lion at 10120 Johnston Road. PPD Sergeant Adam Roberts, who was in uniform, working off-duty at the nearby McMullen Creek Shopping Center, informed dispatch he would respond to the call. He drove to the parking lot of the Food Lion where he saw the suspect, 46-year-old Dennis Bodden, walking towards Johnston Road holding a bag containing various grocery items. Bodden was very well known to Pineville Police as being a chronic shoplifting suspect at this Food Lion and having violent tendencies towards police and the public.

In addition, Bodden had two outstanding felony breaking and entering warrants and felony larceny after breaking and entering warrants from this same Food Lion on Johnston Road. Bodden was contacted by Sgt. Roberts in the upper parking lot of Food Lion where Bodden ignored and refused verbal and lawful orders to stop. Bodden refused to follow these lawful orders and continued walking away from the sergeant. Sgt. Roberts continued to follow Bodden across Johnston Road while requesting back-up officers to assist. Bodden became physically confrontational with Sgt. Roberts and less lethal force was used in a Taser deployment by the Sergeant. Less lethal was not effective on Bodden as he continued to walk away from Sgt. Roberts and go towards Cedar Circle Drive.

Bodden and Sergeant Roberts then briefly reengaged in a struggle, while Officer Down ran toward the two of them. Bodden then charged toward Officer Down, who unsuccessfully attempted to deploy his Taser on Bodden. Bodden and Officer Down momentarily engaged physically, before Bodden was able to grab the cord to Officer Down’s radio, ultimately pulling Officer Downs’ radio away from his body. At one point, the cord from Officer Downs’ radio was fully extended while within the grasp of Bodden. During this struggle between Bodden and Officer Down, Sergeant Roberts drew his firearm. Bodden, seeing Sergeant Roberts draw his weapon, stepped towards Sergeant Roberts and appeared to reach for the gun as Sergeant Roberts pulled it away. Officer Down screamed, presumably at Sergeant Roberts, “Get him! Get him!” just before Sergeant Roberts fired his weapon three times, striking Bodden.

After Sergeant Roberts fired the last shot, Officer Down screamed once more, “Get him!” Bodden walked a short distance before falling to the ground. As Sergeant Roberts and Officer Down placed Bodden in handcuffs, Sergeant Roberts’ body-worn camera recorded him stating, “I didn’t want him to hit you, get you. He’s already bit me real bad.” Officers use a knife to cut off his raincoat to find the wounds for treatment. Bodden eventually appears to become non-responsive as additional first responders arrive. In early July, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced it would not file criminal charges in Bodden’s shooting. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office deemed the shooting a justified use of force, noting that the footage appeared to show Bodden reaching for the sergeant’s gun during the fight. The officer involved is back to full duty.

  2. So because the officer was physically unsuited to take this SHOPLIFTER down without lethal force he was killed. That is bad policing, an unarmed shoplifter should not be subject to the death penalty.

  4. " The Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office deemed the shooting a justified use of force"

Who is in charge there, Captain Obvious or Lieutenant N.S. Sherlock?

  5. This guy is a perfect example of what is wrong with the court systems. No one should get to the point of being a career shoplifter with a history of violence towards humans in general. Him being free put two officers in danger. This guy's story should have been told years ago by a prison guard who said "He's here for life because all he does is steal and assault people, so he's never leaving"

  6. That poor guy from the food lion. You can tell he’s called multiple times about the same guy for the same thing.
He reminded of the family guy episode where quagmire gets his junk stuck in the window and calls 911 and says “ya it’s me quagmire, ya it’s in a window this time.”

  7. americans definetly have a different culture to eveyone else ,this guy would still be alive anywhere in europe

  8. Wow, that is a dangerous person off of the streets for good. So much going on here. Calling this guy a "shoplifting suspect" is a little misleading. Sounds like he was a habitual shoplifter, which means he should have been in jail before this incident. In any event, before he got shot, he was looking at a lot more charges than just shoplifting.

It feels like this guy wanted this to happen because what was going to happen to him if he got caught again? Nothing serious, yet he just said I'm walking until someone stops me. That first officer was overly patient with him, waiting forever for backup to arrive, plus he took a couple major assaults before he finally shot the guy. This criminal had every chance to not let it get to that point. In fact, he did all he could to push it to that point.

  9. i know of some guys who robbed a police cruiser because something similar to this. cop got out and pursued a suspect and lost sight and didn’t look like he was coming back anytime soon. they stole his rifle with a suppressor inside of a pouch, full pistol mags and rifle magazines, med kits (tourniquets), cool flashlights and whistles and all types of shit. all because the police officer walked away from his patrol car after another dumbass

  10. Sad situation, this guy wasn`t a bum. He had a law degree, Masters degree from Columbia University. What he also had was a mental illness. It's a shame that most of the mental hospitals have been closed, and this is what happens when people cannot get treatment.

  11. Those tasers are so often, bloody hopeless. Sometimes I feel they make the situation more dangerous for the officers.

  12. These apartments where this black guy lives are amazing compared 2 what we live in , in England i bet this black guy had money aswell to pay for his groceries in his bank account, just so thick . Free apartment free food and drink free money black people don't pay for jack shit the worst part is for me they end up living in better accommodation than us when we have 2 pay for everything can't believe it
