On December 2, 2023, Houston police initiated an investigation into the shooting incident involving an HPD officer and the subsequent fatal shooting of an armed suspect in the 7000 block of Harwin Drive around 1:15 a.m.
The suspect, later identified as Edwin Joey Villegas, aged 23 by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was involved in the altercation.
The wounded officer, Sergeant M. Valle, 38, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was promptly transported to Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center. He remains in stable condition. Sergeant Valle discharged his duty weapon during the incident and has been an HPD officer since April 2007, serving in the Midwest Patrol Division.
HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, including Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detectives D. Escobar, C. Walker, and N. Barnes, provided details of the incident:
Officers from the Midwest Patrol Division’s Crime Suppression Team were conducting an investigation at the specified address. During the course of their investigation, officers located the suspect, temporarily losing sight of him at one point. As Sergeant Valle searched behind a building at the location, the suspect fired multiple shots into the sergeant’s vehicle, striking him several times. Despite the injuries, the sergeant managed to exit his vehicle and return fire toward the suspect.
Following the exchange, the suspect fled the scene but was later discovered near the corner of a building, having sustained gunshot wounds. Officers administered first aid to both the suspect and the injured sergeant. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene and transported Sergeant Valle to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.
Update: Sgt. Mauricio Valle who has 17 years of experience with the Houston Police Department released from hospital 4 days after being shot.
A statement from Police Chief Troy Finner on the Houston Facebook page wrote:
“I’m thrilled to announce that Sergeant Mauricio Valle was discharged from the hospital today.
A big thank you to the amazing staff at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and the people of Houston for their prayers and ongoing support.
Sergeant Valle is in good spirits as he recovers. He is eager to return to protecting and serving the citizens of our great city.â€
