Saint Paul Police Press Conference on Shooting Death of Ronald Davis

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, Saint Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell released body worn camera video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The shooting occurred after a vehicle rear-ended a Saint Paul police squad that was stopped at the intersection of Thomas Avenue West and North Griggs Street. After the officer got out of his squad, the driver of the striking vehicle initiated a physical confrontation and a fight ensued. During the course of the fight, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the adult male who had confronted him. St. Paul Fire medics were immediately summoned, but their lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and the man died at the scene. The officer was not injured.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently investigating the shooting.

The video and Axtell’s remarks are posted below.

  1. That was so sad that guy coming after him with the knife he is lucky to be alive I pray for there safety always they always are are heroes the good. Cops the bad ones we are getting rid of them one by one but this was not that. Case

  2. Do you think a person who is having a mental break can kill someone or only sane people with criminal history?
Whatever the reason for him attacking an officer the danger was real. The eminent danger was there. Even though it happened quickly the officer was still able to say get away from me and I believe he said stop.

  3. Nekima Levy Armstrong, a "proud African Queen," and an attorney said the shooting was bad, and she didn't care what happened. “This man should still be alive,” she said. “I don’t care what happened in that car situation.” My question madam, and I use that term loosely, is what would you have done?

  4. WHY on earth was the car the angry man drove in completely smashed on the front?!?!
Why dont we get to see the crash of the car in the cops car?!
A bodycam saves 30 seconds of video before it is activated, so the crash must be on video,
Isnt there a scenario whereby the cop “brake-checked” the man, causing his car to crash and making him angry????

  5. Can you say RESTRAINT!!!! Seriously, he put his life in jeopardy by waiting so long. A very brave and compassionate man in my opinion

  6. FACT: in 2016 4 blacks were killed by cops. That same year, 13,869 blacks were killed by other blacks. No marches. Nuthin'

  7. Now the community is wanting to know why the PD did not use non-lethal force…. Simple, Davis was not using non-lethal force, so why should they? I'm so sick and tired of the "community activist" that try to justify criminals activities. Great job by the Officer and I'm glad he went home to his family.

  8. How can they protest this incident. I am black but I think the officer had to fire his weapon. This suspect was intentional and unrelenting in his efforts to harm the officer. No injustice here! Pray for the officer
When people see the truth accept it and be upset with your family member who chose his fate.
