    want to. I think the law has already taken effect. So all us drivers when we are in our vehicles, we need to be even more

25. He was not J walking in an unlawful way. California Code: Vehicle Code § 21955, California law prohibits jaywalking only if there is an immediate chance of a collision . So, the law in California is that you can cross just about anywhere you like but a reasonable person would have to think your doing so was not dangerous to you or to the motor vehicle driver. It is important to know the laws of the state but most states only define J walking as crossing against a signal or crossing between to adjacent intersections with a crosswalk. The CA police were abusing the law by stopping people that crossed between intersections that were so far apart that it would be unreasonable to expect the individual to use them and instead choses to cross at places between them so California had so many tickets thrown out that they simply changed the law. Even if you cross at a crosswalk against the light as defined in section A, 1) A peace officer, as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2 of the Penal Code, shall not stop a pedestrian for a violation of subdivision (a) unless a reasonably careful person would realize there is an immediate danger of a collision with a moving vehicle or other device moving exclusively by human power. So basically the only time it is illegal is if someone thinks you crossed in such a way that a driver would have to take extreme measures to avoid a collision or if you step in front of a car and it hits you. Best to know the laws for the state, but cops in CA shall not stop a pedestrian for simply crossing the street. In legal terms, the words "Shall not" mean that to do so would be misapplication of the law so if a cop stopped you and said the needed your ID for a jaywalking ticket and you refuse to show it, you are in your rights as long as a reasonable person would believe that the crossing was done safely.
