6. One morning I went out for a walk. On one of the streets I walked down I found where someone had hit a dumpster and pushed it over a fire hydrant and knocked the hydrant off the riser pipe, but no water was coming out. Had no idea if someone lost control and left or did it on purpose. When I looked down the riser and the hydrant on the far side of the dumpster I realized that the reason no water was coming out was because the valve plate was on the bottom of the valve sealing off the water and the hydrant was designed to push the valve plate down through a rod that connected the hydrant to the plate but that rod was not bolted to either. So when the hydrant was broken off the connector rod stayed in the riser and the valve stayed shut.

   So I called the non-emergency number and let them know what had happened so it could be fixed as soon as possible. It was Sunday and they were out early afternoon Monday replacing the hydrant.

   So I guess the hydrant in this video was built differently or the pickup somehow pushed something into the riser and pressed the connector rod down enough to open the valve plate which might explain why they were having so much difficulty pushing it back.

36. I'm a former EMT and I've been to accidents where the car was demolished and the occupants walked away and other that were fender benders and it was a fatality. I would look at accidents and go "WTF?"
