A History of India: The French Territory of Pondicherry | India Historical Documentary

Pondicherry located in Tamil Nadu is an exception in Indian territory. In the former French colony, the city’s culture has been shaped by many influences. Dupleix, governor-general of the French establishment with Indian cooperation managed to establish a flourishing trading post. However, this success aroused envy and a war between the English and French broke out to find out which country would be in control of Pondicherry. Nowadays, 5000 inhabitants have French nationality and a clear inheritance can be seen in architecture, religion and language.

Catholicism and Hinduism are peacefully coexisting, and it’s common to believe in several gods. From the sandalwood to Lakshmi, the elephant who keeps Ganesh’s temple, everything reminds us that Indian traditions remain essential.

  1. In 1962, five thousand Pondicherrians chose to be French nationals, in 2014 this number had not changed. How come ?
I thought the French had long lost their territory to the jealous British.
