In this video, we answer the question, Is HDR on Samsung devices broken by design?
We tested the Galaxy S24 Ultra against the Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro to explore all the intricacies of how Samsung interferes with the original content to achieve what they feel is a more immersive final result, with some mixed results.

Mine blinds me, so…
It's bright enough for me
Is the adaptive colour tone on?
The grainy display issue or mura effect spoiled this beautiful stuff…experts are attributing this to be a hardware problem.
It's also probably bc of the anti reflectove screen
Did you notice colour banding or grainy texture (or mura effect) on your screen?
Great video!!! Did you notice color banding on s24 ultra?
I am pretty certain that this screen problem showing HDR content, is also to do with the anti-reflective covering on the screen which of course is now completely flat, unlike the Samsung galaxy s23 ultra which has a slight curve.
I have heard many people talking about this.
The flat screen now being of course anti-reflective in my opinion has absolutely ruined Samsung's reputation for great screens.
The S23 ultra is far better, far brighter, much more deeply saturated and much better suited to HDR content when it does not alter the particular brightness or saturation levels due to the ambient light situation that may be in in any given moment in time.
Because the S23 ultra doesn't have the anti-reflective screen coating like the s24 ultra does, in my opinion it is far more immersive and a much better screen experience.
I have the Samsung galaxy S21 ultra at the moment, however, I am going to upgrade to the S23 ultra.
I am going to give the s24 ultra a complete miss.
Yes the S24 ultra has the Qualcomm 8 gen 3 processor – and the S23 ultra has the 8 Gen 2, but in a real life scenario it makes very little difference unless you're an absolute tech nerd.
They have taken the optical zoom down to ten times in the galaxy S23 ultra to five times in the Samsung galaxy s24 ultra as well.
So saying all of this, in my humble opinion the s24 ultra apart from the processor is a downgrade.
All of the ridiculous hype about the AI capability will only be freely available until 2025, and subsequently at that particular time, we will have to purchase that from Samsung.
My mind is made up now, I am definitely going to get the s23 ultra as an upgrade to my S21 ultra.
Thank you for your videos, and keep up the great work.

Yupe, I noticed this, too.
My s21u [previous phone] was WASY WAY brighter than my current s23u..
Really weird and disappointing
Even samsung tv's does the same and most of Android phones. Its an eye protection protocole.
I believe and if i m not wrong you have not used video brighteness mode which is available in advance features which enhance video picture quality. Because it is available in S23 series phones so same feature available on S24 series as well. In this u have not shown that you used that functionality.
This is such a moronic claim. You have the Extra Dim setting on, and you need to turn off ambient mode on YT. I'm a professional photographer with light measuring equipment, and my S24U is brighter than my girlfriends iphone 15 Pro Max. Learn to use the device before you start making content, as it makes you look ignorant. That's why you ONLY have less than seven hundred likes, with over 17,000 views! Those metrics indicate poor content. However, in the interest of being thorough, we've watched more than twenty HDR videos after watching this vid, just to see if there was anything to your claims. And our findings were that the S24U and 15PM looked almost identical on full settings, with the S24U looking even a bit brighter in scenes with snow covered mountain scenes. Your vid is nothing more than clickbait, with fabricated accusations. The S24U's display is nothing short of absolutely brilliant. And I'd put it head to head against any phone on the planet.
This is a very subjective review. How did you test it?
Of course, Samsung will just respond with a generic answer, just like how you guys will answer this comment—a generic one.
A lot of noise in this video?
All the s24 ultra's have so many screen issue at the beginning vividness was the problem and nowadays grainy/sandy display which becomes worldwide recently and now you mentioned broken HDR.
Samsung latest flagship which is one of the most expensive phones :)) and the point is Samsung makes all the OLED displays even for other brands like Xiaomi or iphone but they're flawless and unfortunately its own phones have so many issues. Why it should be like that? Even they don't care for costumers, they ought to respect people and Samsung users.
I gave up on Samsung after 7 years of using only their flagships. Even without considering the price, it's just too many compromises. I mean, display has issues. Camera software is terrible. One UI isn't as polished as it could be. Vibration is too soft and weak. Speakers are worse compared even to older Samsung devices. You spend your time waiting and hoping for updates that will magically fix everything (does not happen) and right before you know it – it's time for new model to be presented and more then often, "old" (last years) one is crippled with software updates. I hope that "I'm fine with my device" users will become more demanding in future.
This auto brightness issue with hdr content is same in s22 ultra,s23 ultra also, to check 'put torch on ambient sensor near front camera on hdr videos' , you will see more bright image.
It's because samsung is using anti glare coating for their display… it's a bit of a trade off.
I think s24 ultra is trash i returned in a day display was washed out and yea hdr sucks on s24 ultra and cameras not that good yea i got my s23 ultra back, s23 ultra a better phone, didnt like titiaum frame or flatscreen
I don't know if I agree on my s23 ultra HDR looks fantastic
Been the opposite for me S24 Ultra display in HDR on YouTube was incredible.
Seriously, wish i didn't buy this phone
Crazy. This phone is supposed to be the to of the line just to see that it doesn't perform better than my other phone that's half the price. I'm returning mine
I think it has something to do with the Snapdragon gen 3 chip because every phone that I have with the Snapdragon gen 3 chip it has a dim display. But my xiaomi 13t pro HDR content looks amazing. So disappointing. Phone is to expensive to over look. Just got my ultra. I think I'll return it.
This video is all over the place 😅. The vivid update made my s24U look more vivid than my S23U which was not expected.
I don't see any screen grain. I do think some markets may have got defective units coupled with scuttlebutt online the issue is exaggerated
Samsung changes the display for the worse and then says it did so to improve the user experience.
I dont see it, i compared it to my tv that is hdr2000 certified,
i lovr my S24 Ultra and i never have any issues and it still works for me!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Switched back to my 15 pro max sadly. The 24 ultra is great when it comes to the camera very inconsistent especially at night. Taking video of my kid the ultra has noise even in with bright light vs the iPhone. Wish Samsung would just have a great that works right outside the box… waiting
HDR videos S24 ultra is dull as hell. Embarrassing
Ia it just me or this video is not in HDR?
I think it is better to let Marques explain this. You did not make sense of this. And nothing beats a Samsung display. Just chill.
Parabéns Carlos. Merecido. O algoritmo pode não ter ajudado muito o teu canal, mas é bom ver-te aqui
While it sucks that this isn't working as it should for those that use it. I personally think HDR video brightness is a gimmick and a lie. If you're indoors the regular brightness is just fine, HDR brightness just sears your damn retinas and throws the colors way off by adding white light to every lit pixel group. Totally not necessary, I turn it off wherever I can
Pretty much get the same experience on the Tab S9 (I have the Ultra, my wife has the Plus) on apps like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. YouTube works ok, and MXPlayer does well with local files.
How is it broken when you didn't turn on bright video setting? It's a video power saving setting.
I think is effect from anti reflective glass, because the glass is more dark than before
Search video brightness in settings or goto advanced settings and switch to bright and toggle on your preferred video app
Woww. Why do you have your display Soo low.. that's why your video HDR is low. Blast the display bar to the max. SMH
So this is basically just one of the granules of ice that is the tip of the iceberg that is Samsung devices, my biggest gripe is that cell phone carriers do not offer anything higher than 256 or 512 gigabyte models. I went through 512 gigs on my s23 in 5 months. Since then I've been teetering around 10 gigs of space every other day. Thankfully I'm a phone hoarder and I can experiment on what apps I want to keep on my Note 10 while I try to get my stuff together on my 23 before I pick up my 24 Ultra. But here's the real issue now companies are mandating that user privacy data is no longer going to be stored in the cloud and it's going to be stored on the user's phone. I wonder how long it's going to take before 1 terabyte becomes the basic standard because our phones are going to be full of our own stuff. I understand the whole privacy concern but that's only because people are overly concerned about their privacy, which in some cases they should be, but if you're doing it right, you shouldn't be and you should opt out of in device storage. I'm looking at you Google

Thank you for pointing this out. I hope this issue is escalated so that Samsung issues a fix.
I though the problem could have been resolved with the video brightness option. When you select it to bright, it is supposed to make it appear better.
But if it is an ongoing issue, then i guest Samsung should fix it.
Are you sure you don't have "Extra Dim" enabled in the quick settings?
Suttlety of the jabs you take without destroying the products is masterful. Bruh you got this, continued success.
We'll be watching 😉
I've noticed when recording video on the S24 ultra HDR10+ is really dark and colors are way off. It worked perfectly out of the box, but the recent camera update did some damage
That display is not that good like you say. For that price and they still uses a 8 bit screen 😂
looll u gotta redefine your meaning of hdr … hdr wasn't never meant to brighten up scenes but to proper expose them rightfully to how it was originally filmed .. unbelievable
In a lot of HDR dark scenes, the s24 seems to have a black/grey crush, the step shade is so harsh. This reminds me of the Galaxy Note 2's black crush.
A great example of this is the 4k hdr batman lougne fight scene in about 17seconds. Dim areas are bright grey. Does not happen on my note 10+, s22 ultra and on my oled tv
