Bump stock ruling could trigger booming rapid-fire marketplace

If the Supreme Court rules that bump stocks aren’t machine guns later this summer, it could quickly open an unfettered marketplace of newer, more powerful rapid-fire devices.

The Trump administration, in a rare break from gun rights groups, quickly banned bump stocks after the 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert that was the deadliest in U.S. history. In the ensuing years, gun rights groups have challenged the underlying rationale that bump stocks are effectively machine guns, in a legal fight now before the Supreme Court.

Justices appeared divided on the issue during oral arguments in February, and are on the clock to hand down a ruling by June. How they ultimately define machine guns will have a sweeping impact not only on bumpstocks, but a whole class of similar rapid-fire devices effectively banned in the U.S.

  1. Ooh, scary gun accessories. Save the children! Not a machine gun if you had been given a brain to use!

  2. NOTHING happens "automatically" with a bump stock. It is entirely reliant on a very specific use of multiple muscle groups with both hands to harness the recoil.

  3. If you want to ban something then take it to a congressional vote. The ATF cant arbitrarily let alone unilaterally change or interpret wording of law. Imagine the potential chaos if we just continue allowing enforcement agencies to be interpret current law, make law and then enforce it. You may not be a gun person but the powers you’re idly standing by or actively cheering on will one day come for you.

  4. People should be able to own any kind of weapon, such as hand grenades, rocket launchers, tanks etc. They were allowed cannons during Washington and Jefferson's presidency.

  5. You mean they want people to be able to shoot a rifle with accuracy and have women able to shoot them. That ruling was made by an idiot out the get-go who doesn't know how guns work.

  6. Ammunition is way too expensive to be just firing it off fast and furious. It might be fun once in a while but nobody plans to be doing that bump stock or not.

  7. Every time they talk about making something illegal, more people buy it. Then if they do make it illegal, they just create a huge black market for it.

  8. Horseshit! Media hasn't got a clue! The public at large is not looking for rapid fire at all, Have you seen the price of ammo for God sakes! Rhetorical 😅

  9. ATF went after the dumbest add-on device. They should have tried this on Force Reset Triggers (FRT).

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
