Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Tammy Duckworth (D-) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) are holding a news conference on protecting access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) in response to the ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court establishing personhood for frozen human embryos.
The state court’s decision came from consideration of a civil case concerning the mishandling of stored embryos, but led the University of Alabama at Birmingham and other medical providers to pause IVF treatments altogether, given the uncertain burden of liability they now face.
Reproductive rights advocates see the Alabama ruling, like recent abortion restrictions, as part of a pattern of the encroachment of government control over medical decisions, particularly in regard to women’s health.
The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
