Watch live: NASA officials give remarks on recent lunar landing

NASA and Intuitive Machines, a private spaceflight engineering company, are holding a joint news conference Wednesday to discuss last week’s successful landing of the robotic craft Odysseus on the Moon.

The mission was the first of its kind for a U.S. team in 50 years.

The automated lander touched down near the Moon’s South Pole, a region believed to contain reserves of water that could be an important resource for future exploration.

Odysseus’s mission reportedly ended a few days earlier than planned. The lander hit the ground at a slightly faster velocity than intended, causing it to topple onto its side, according to Ars Technica.

It did, however, successfully transmit several images back to Earth.

The event is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. EST.
