How To Find a Bad Brake Hose

A bad brake hose may be difficult to find. They can sometimes be confused with a bad brake caliper. In this video I share my method of diagnosing a bad brake hose. It’s simple, easy, and only takes a couple of minutes.

I hope you find this information useful and entertaining.

  1. Nice one, spun the wheels while jacked up and thought everything good, did not now about pumping pedal first, it's that damn hose! 😊😉😃

  2. I have a Chevrolet Captiva and the brakes overheated (talking red hot rotors) on the highway. Brought it back home and put new calipers, rotors and pads on the front. Guess what, the wheel on passenger side does not turn and the rotors heat up very badly. I thought it was a defective caliper until i researched online and found that brake hose could be bad.
Your video confirms this to be the case. I am surprised that most people think the hose cannot be a problem. In my opinion, it should be the first thing to check since its the cheapest part. Anyway, i am going to be changing that hose and i hope that will fix it.
Thanks for all your videos and for going a step further by determining the root cause i.e. taking apart that hose!

  3. 2010 Jeep liberty. Brakes locking up. Changed FR caliper thinking it was the culprit since that wheel felt hotter. Didn't fix it. So I watched your video and changed the brake hose. Didn't fix it. Now not sure what can be the problem. One thing I noticed is that after the brakes lock up, if I release pressure from ANY of the bleeders (FL, FR, RL, RR) the brakes immediately release, the car rolls in neutral, and the brakes go back to normal (until they stick again). What might be the issue? MC, booster, ABS module, old fluid? What boggles my mind is – what is building pressure throughout the WHOLE system, causing the pedal to be rock hard and unpressable, but is immediately resolved by releasing pressure from ANY bleeder screw? The fact that both front and rear circuits are affected is perplexing. Something must be pressurizing inside the system. I don't think it can be a sticking MC or booster because the pedal is stiff at the "home" position, not the depressed position. The only thing that makes sense in my head is fluid expansion due to heat/water in system boiling? But from everything I've read, that would cause spongy brakes, not locking brakes. Any ideas?

  4. Perfect video Eric! Thanks so much for schooling the DIYér that can't or don't want to spend the cash for a mechanic for the install.

  5. Great video. Just wondering what you did exactly when you held the brake pedal down? What does the master cylinder bleeding out mean? I have these little silicone plugs i bought that I use to stop fluid hoses on my car when i'm doing work and I was going to plug the brake hose so I didn't have to pinch it with clamps (i'm afraid of damaging it like that).

  6. As a pro Brake guy I find some hose's that act like a Check Valve – Fluid one way but not releasing ! They do wear out from the inside also ..

  7. So had a caliper hanging up. Inspected the hose, looks good. Cracked the bleeder valve, only dribbled out. Calipers were cheap Autozone refurbs, so thinking that's the culprit. They look like shit anyway so if nothing else it will be an aesthetic upgrade. Thanks for the tips. 😎👍

  8. Brilliant video man.. My niece is spending too much money on her car and the MOT test failed her on Brake hoses for being rusted with sings of pitting. The guys she goes to seem to keep her coming back constantly. I want to check the brake hoses myself to put my mind at rest which is why I'm watching ur videos man. THANKS for the information on here. I'm going to jack the ca up in the morning and take a butchers hook at those Brake hoses..

  9. 2001 Dodge 3500 van, same problem with the metal mounting bracket around the hose. The bracket filled up with rust and squeezed the hose 50% shut. I could hear the caliper releasing as the fluid tried to go back up the hose when I released the brakes. A+ video Eric!

  10. If you press the bake pad down 1 to 1.5 inches with your rod this engages the master cylinder and thus allowing you to stop brake fluid from draining out. No need for crimping brake hoses and risking internal damaged. I changed all for of my callipers this way with no mess. Super awesome tip.

  11. Thanks again Eric, I saw this video two years ago and this week after rebuilding the caliper (ETG inspired) again the rotor is heating up. This video came to mind last night… It also occurred to me how little fluid dripped out of the hose and it was impossible to vacuum bleed the brake might also be clues.

  12. I can push in my piston back into the cylinder by hands but it get stuck when using brakes,it doesnt release the brake pads when the brakes are released. Does that mean the brake hose is bad or maybe the piston itself has seized?

  13. Will be checking that on my car tonight since I have the same symptoms as described here. 2014 Honda Civic with 489 000 kms.

  14. I have a 08 c300 & no fluid will come out when i try to bleed but when i removed the bleeder screw fluid drizzled out…what you think is wrong?

  15. Great video! Got right to the point, great explanation, very informative. This is how all “Car How-To’s” should be, so I have time to look for that 10mm socket.

  16. I replaced my caliper on the right side of my 2009 Focus because it was sticking intermittently. The whole wheel was super heated 3 times from the brakes locking up. After about 2 weeks of working fine, I thought the problem was solved. Then it happened again, worse this time. Super heated in about 5 minutes. Now I changed the brake hose, and It's been fine for a week now, but I'm not going to celebrate yet, lol. The hose did not look damaged at all on the outside, but I forgot to cut it open and check the inside. I suspect it was damaged inside from being super hot at least 4 times, and who knows how many times heated above normal.

  17. Me i replaced rotor, caliper ,had same problem on right front, now i buy it new hose we vill see ,i think 100%like in Erik's video is the problem with the hose ,i change today!when i parked the car 15 min the presure was released then I pushed the brake again to the floor , caliper was stuck again and efter 15 min again released ,i hope is the hose,i have this problem just in front right

  18. I have a honda civic with sticking calipers i have changed pads discs and calipers would you suggest to change the brake hoses too as i still have issues

  19. If I am changing a caliper in the future I will most likely go ahead and change the hose also. This was a very helpful video. Thanks
